The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is perfect for anyone wanting to discover the basics about spirits. You study online at your own pace, at a time you choose. That means the course can fit in to your own busy lifestyles. Study online over four weeks at your own pace. How will it work?

You’ll follow seven online modules over four weeks. You work at a pace and a time to suit you.

You’ll join other students in an online classroom, logging on when you want to.

The seven modules: 

  • What are spirits and how are they made?
  • Cognac, vodka and an introduction to tasting
  • Whisk(e)y
  • Rum and Tequila
  • Flavoured spirits and aromatised wines
  • Mixing with spirits
  • Revision and resources

You can book this course through One Foot in the Grapes (OFITG) to study from anywhere in the UK.

You will self-study for the WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits in your own time via the online WSET portal.

But what does self-study mean?

You’ll access the WSET global classroom where you will follow the seven modules in your own time, over four weeks.

You’ll have the support of an online educator, plus additional guidance from OFITG.

The course covers topics from spirits ingredients and production methods, to how to taste spirits, to different types of spirits.

All courses start on a Monday  and last for four weeks.

How long does it take?

This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours’ study time across the four online study weeks. Classes are delivered in English.

How much does it cost?

The online version of the WSET Level 1 Award  in Spirits course, with an online exam, is £165.

If a paper exam is chosen (Liverpool only) the fee is £146.

You will buy your own spirits (see below).

OFITG is your point of contact for booking exams and any admin and extra support on the course.

Tasting spirits

You’ll learn to taste spirits using the WSET approach.  Students can post their tasting notes in the Online Classroom for review by the educator. The recommended spirits for this course are:

  • A neutral, big brand vodka
  • Cognac VS and VSOP or VSOP and XO
  • A Bourbon
  • A peated Single Malt Scotch
  • An unpeated Single Malt Scotch
  • Two molasses-based rums
  • A 100% Agave Blanco Tequila
  • London Dry Gin
  • A vermouth

You will buy these spirits as part of the online course.
You may already own some of them, perhaps you may have a favourite retailer. Our suggestions on where to buy include online retailer.


As an option you could choose  these samples which have been selected with support from the WSET. They are £55.


How do you pass?

You would sit a 45 minute closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need to achieve 70% or more.

The exam date for each self-study online course is confirmed individually with a student and One Foot in the Grapes.

Ofqual regulates this qualification.
