Tasting spirits

You’ll learn to taste spirits using WSET’s Systematic Approach to Tasting®

Students can post their tasting notes in the Online Classroom for review by the educator.

There are tasting exercises throughout the course to guide you.

For these, you will need to purchase samples of the following spirits:

  • Cognac or Armagnac
  • Bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey
  • Single Malt Scotch Whisky
  • White or golden rum
  • Aged high-quality dark rum
  • Tequila (preferably 100% agave) blanco or reposado
  • Neutral, big-brand vodka
  • Characterful vodka
  • London Dry Gin
  • Aniseed-flavoured spirit and/or bitter

You may already own some of them, perhaps you may have a favourite retailer. Our suggestions on where to buy include online retailer The Whisky Exchange which has a selection of samples, or,  as an option this samples provider which specialises in WSET courses.

How do you pass?

You would sit a 60-minute  closed-book exam of 45 multiple-choice questions.

The exam date for each self-study online course is confirmed individually with a student and One Foot in the Grapes.

Ofqual regulates this qualification.

There are certain technical requirements for online exams (check here).
