WSET Courses

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, often referred to as WSET, is a global organisation which arranges courses and exams in the field of wine and spirits.  Founded in 1969, and headquartered in London, it is generally regarded as one of the world’s leading provider of wine education.

One Foot In The Grapes is now an Approved Programme Provider for the Wine & Spirits Education Trust and will teach WSET Level 1 & 2 Awards in Wine in Liverpool from the spring of 2020.  Jane Clare will run these WSET Courses at Rope & Twines on Bold Street in Liverpool.  At the end of each course there will be an examination, and successful candidates will receive a WSET certificate and a lapel pin.

WSET Level 1 Course

COURSE SYNOPSIS

A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine.

For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

COURSE DELIVERY

This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours of study time, in a classroom or online.

Assessment is by a 45 minute closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions.  70% or more is the required pass mark.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age in the country where you are attending the course to participate in any alcohol tasting.

COST

WSET Level One costs £180 per person, granting you full access to the classroom, tasting samples, and all online help via the WSET Global Portal

WSET Level 2 Course

COURSE SYNOPSIS

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is the ideal course for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines, as well as those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)
  • How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:
    • Chardonnay
    • Pinot Grigio/Gris
    • Sauvignon Blanc
    • Riesling
    • Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Merlot
    • Pinot Noir
    • Syrah/Shiraz
  • The style and quality of wines:
    • made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
    • produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
  • How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:
    • Sparkling wines
    • Fortified wines
  • Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
  • Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
  • Principles of food and wine pairing

COURSE DELIVERY

This course is ideal for complete beginners – no prior knowledge is required and you don’t have to have completed any other qualification to enrol. If you are completely new to the world of wine, you may wish to study the Level 1 Award in Wines first, either in the classroom or online, but this is not essential.

You will be expected to have read the provided textbook prior to commencing the course – this will be sent to you upon booking. For those opting for the intensive consecutive-day course, it is important that you have completed the majority of your 12 recommended private study hours prior to the first day of your course, as there will be little time to study between classes. 

The exam takes place in the last session of the course. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions to be completed in one hour. To pass you must correctly answer 55% of the questions.

WSET Levels 3 & 4

WSET Level 3 in Wines

For those students wishing to take their learning to the next level after finishing the pre requisite Level 2 qualification, you can sign up for Level 3.  This is a high-level course in wines, perfect for the serious wine enthusiast or those who need to make informed decisions or recommendations about wine for work.

One Foot In The Grapes will soon be able to offer this qualification, but in the meantime can recommend centres close for students to attend.

The duration of study is 5 full days and the cost is currently around £850.

WSET Level 4 in Wines (Diploma)

For those students wishing to take their learning to the next level after finishing the pre requisite Level 3 qualification, you can sign up for WSET’s market-leading Level 4 Diploma in Wines at WSET School London and gain global recognition as an authoritative wine specialist.

This qualification is only available for study in London, and study time is expected to last in the region of  2 years, at a cost of around £4,000.
