Aldi picks up prestigious drinks retailer of the year gong

Aldi has been named Best Multiple Drinks Retailer of the Year in the Harpers Awards.

It beat off competition from 2014’s winner Co-op and Waitrose, which was also in the running for the gong.

The Harpers Awards are designed to celebrate the crème de la crème of the wine and spirits world.

This is the second such accolade that Aldi has received this year; in February it was named Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year at the Drinks Retailing Awards in February.

This year Aldi’s drinks range has won over 130 awards at international competitions.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, said:  “It has been a record year for Aldi as the UK continues to wholeheartedly embrace our philosophy to sell a tight range of keenly priced products that doesn’t compromise on taste or quality.

“To get the stamp of approval from Harpers, one of the most prestigious drinks awards in the business – is testament to our buyers’ hard work and commitment, and really is worth raising a glass to.”

The win comes days after Aldi announced that it is to sell selected wines online by the case from early 2016.

Other Harpers Award winners announced at Vinapolis in London include Naked Wines  and Oddbins.
