WSET courses - Level 1 Award in Wines

If you’re new to learning about wine, the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a hands-on introduction.

You don’t need to know anything about wine to take this course.  

You’ll explore what wine is, how it is made and the main types and styles of wine.  

You’ll also develop the skills to describe wines and how to make food and wine pairings.  

What you will learn

  • Wine basics: Grape growing, regions and how wine is made
  • Principal grape varieties and their characteristics
    (chardonnay, riesling, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, syrah/shiraz, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot)
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of pairing wine and food 
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Course details

How much time? This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours’ study time, in a classroom or online.

How do you pass? You would sit a 45 minute closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions.  To pass, you need to achieve 70% or more.

What do I need? There are no entry requirements. You must be of legal drinking age to taste wine but being underage is not a barrier to taking the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines course.

Option 1: Online self-study  £126 – £145

You’ll have access to an online self-study portal and will study at your own pace and time over four weeks, guided by an educator. This course offers flexible study time to suit busy lifestyles.

WSET courses - Level 2 Award in Wines

WSET Level Two Logo

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is the ideal course for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines, as well as those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

What you will learn

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)
  • How to describe and compare the styles of wines produced from internationally and regionally important grape varieties
  • How to interpret wine labels from the main wine producing regions of the world
  • How to give basic guidance on appropriate selection and service
  • Understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation

Course details

You can take this course if you are a complete beginner. You don’t need a qualification to enrol. However, you may want to consider if you’d like to study the Level 1 Award in Wines to give you some background to the world of wine. 

How much time?  The total study time is 28 hours, which includes 11 hours’ private study. You’ll receive a study pack before the course begins, which One Foot in the Grapes encourages you to read before the course begins.

How do you pass?  A one-hour exam takes the form of 50 multiple choice questions, online or in a classroom. To gain the award you must achieve a 55% pass rate. 

What do I need? There are no entry requirements.  You don’t need the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines to study this course.

You’ll have access to an online self-study portal and will study at your own pace and time over five weeks guided by an educator. This course offers flexible study time to suit busy lifestyles.

This is a beginner level introduction to spirits for people starting a career in the industry or pursuing an interest in spirits.
It offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. You’ll explore the main styles and types of spirits through sight, smell, and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas.

This is a beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring spirits and liqueurs for those working in the industry or spirits enthusiasts.

You’ll learn about the fundamental production methods and principal raw materials discovering how they are used to make the key spirit styles. You’ll also explore the key practices and principles of serving spirits and the use of spirits in cocktails.
