WSET Level 1 Award in Wines – online self-study
You can book this course (at least 10 days before course start date) through One Foot in the Grapes (OFITG) from anywhere in the UK.
You will self-study for the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines in your own time via the online WSET global classroom.

You will have the support of an online educator and OFITG.
At the end of the four-week course you will:
- Understand the key stages in grape growing and winemaking
- Know the types, characteristics and styles of wines made from the principal grape varieties and other examples of wines.
- Know the key principles and practices involved in the storage and service of wine.

How long does it take?
This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours’ study time in total across four weeks. Classes are delivered in English.
How much does it cost?
The online version of the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines course, with an online exam, is £145. If a paper exam is chosen (Liverpool only) the fee is £126.
You source your own wines and OFITG will give guidance.
How will it work?
You’ll follow five online modules. You work at a pace and a time to suit you. One Foot in the Grapes will offer extra support if you need it.
The five modules:
- What is wine and how is it made?
- Types and styles of wine
- Grape varieties and wines
- Storage and service of wines
- Revision
Tasting wine
You’ll learn to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT). To fully enjoy and understand the modules, One Foot in the Grapes advises that you should try at least six wines. You will buy these for the online course and we can offer recommendations.
As an option This samples provider has the approval of the WSET.
How do you pass?
You would sit a 45 minute closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need to achieve 70% or more.
The exam date for each self-study online course is confirmed individually with a student and One Foot in the Grapes.
Ofqual regulate this qualification.

Do you need any qualifications?
There are no entry requirements. You must be 18 to take part in the winetasting; but if you are underage that does not stop you taking part in the theory sessions and sitting the examination. Our classes are delivered in English.
