Study for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines across eight consecutive Monday evenings at Define Food & Wine in Sandiway, Cheshire.

You’ll explore the winemaking and environmental factors that impact the style and quality of wines.

And through theory and tasting over 40 wines, led by Jane Clare of One Foot in the Grapes, you’ll learn how to describe them with confidence.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines:  Eight study evenings, Cheshire 

  • What is it: The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is designed for beginners, or people wanting to build on the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines qualification.
  • Where and when is it: This course is studied one Monday evening a week, over eight weeks, at Define Food & Wine Ltd, Chester Road, Sandiway.  The exam will be in the 9th week, on a Monday or Tuesday evening.
  • Dates :
    Consecutive Mondays:
    September 14-November 2nd, 2026
    All from 6.30-9pm
    Exam:
    Monday November 9 @7pm;
    or Tuesday November 10 @7pm
  • Venue access:
    Parking is nearby. The teaching room is on the ground floor.
  • Entry reqirements: You don’t need the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines to study this course. You must be over 18 
  • To complete the booking:  One Foot in the Grapes will request a form of photo ID.
  • How does it work: There are eight sessions across the eight evenings, looking at 30 grape varieties, their styles around the world, and how winemaking and the environment influences them. See below for the course outline.
  • The study time: The total study time is 28 hours, which includes the classroom time and 11 hours’ private study.
  • Wines: You’ll taste a minimum of 40 samples of wine during the course.
  • The study fee: The fee includes all wines and food samples and the examination – but not resit exams.  
  • Study pack: When you book, you’ll receive the book Wines: Looking Behind the Label, a work book and the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).

How do you pass?
You sit an hour’s exam of 50 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is 55%.

The eight sessions of the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course

Week 1:

Course induction – tasting technique – pairing wine and food

Week 2: 

Factors influencing the production of red wines – Pinot Noir –  Zinfandel/Primitivo

Week 3:

Factors influencing the production of white, sweet and rosé wines –  Riesling – Chenin Blanc – Sémillon/Semillon – Furmint

Week 4:

Chardonnay – Sauvignon Blanc – Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris – Gewurztraminer – Viognier – Albariño

Week 5:

Merlot – Cabernet Sauvignon – Syrah/Shiraz

Week 6:

Gamay –  Grenache/Garnacha – Tempranillo – Carmenère – Malbec –  Pinotage

Week 7:

Cortese, – Garganega – Verdicchio –  Fiano –  Nebbiolo – Barbera – Corvina – Sangiovese –  Montepulciano

Week 8:

Sparkling wines – Fortified wines
