WSET Level 2 Award in Wines in Liverpool: Three full days

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Overview

This course, in a Liverpool venue, is studied over three full days.
To achieve the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines, you’ll study eight modules, and take a multiple-choice exam.
The total study time for the course is 28 hours which includes the coursework and an additional 11 hours’ private study.
You’ll receive a study pack in advance of the course.
This includes the book Wines: Looking Behind the Label, a work book and the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).

The modules:

1: Tasting technique; pairing wine and food
2: Factors influencing the production of red wines: Pinot Noir, Zinfandel/Primitivo
3: Factors influencing the production of white, sweet and rosé wines: Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Sémillon/Semillon, Furmint
4: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris. Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Albariño
5: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz 
6: Gamay, Grenache/Garnacha, Tempranillo, Carmenère, Malbec, Pinotage
7: Cortese, Garganega, Verdicchio, Fiano, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Corvina, Sangiovese, Montepulciano
8: Sparkling wines,  fortified wines

Tasting wine on the three-day course

You’ll learn to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT).
You’ll taste a minimum of 43 samples of wine during the three-day course.
These are chosen to reflect the topics of each module, and to help you calibrate the theory.
The recommended samples can be found on Page 13 of the course specification.

How long does the course take and where is it?

OFITG works with venues in Liverpool to bring you this three-day course.
They include Ropes and Twines, City Wine Bar and Lu Ban Restaurant.
There is a set of dates and formats (see below) to  choose and select in the shopping basket.
We’re also able to offer bespoke group courses for trade and hospitality businesses. Just ask for details.
The first day will begin with registration and then across the three days we’ll go through the course modules with practical tasting sessions.
There will be breaks, including for lunch.

How much does it cost?

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines classroom course via One Foot in the Grapes is £360.
That includes the study pack, wine and food samples, and the examination fee. It does not include exam resit fees.

Do you need any qualifications?

There are no entry requirements.
You don’t need the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines to study this course, but you may prefer to have studied it as additional background learning. The choice is yours.
Our classes are delivered in English. 

How do you pass?

You sit an hour’s closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need to achieve 55% or more.
There will be a mock test to boost your confidence.
The WSET team marks the exam papers and One Foot in the Grapes will let you know if you have been successful.  If you pass, you’ll receive a WSET certificate and also a lapel pin.
Ofqual regulate this qualification.
